Agenda Spinhuis (updated 29-12-2014)

Maandag 29-12 21:00 Judgement Day 2: the UvA strikes back!
Maandag is onze tweede judgement day party!

Donderdag 8-1 20:30 Spinema: Ikiru (1952)

IKIRU    1952
(生きる)
Directed by Akira Kurosawa
143 minutes
In Japanese with English subtitles

Although Japanese director Akira Kurosawa is best known for his huge, epic samurai movies, it is this film which is considered by many critics to be his finest creation (and he has made so many masterpieces). Ikiru centers on a melancholy bureaucrat Kenji Watanabe who works at Tokyo City Hall. After dedicating 30 years of his life to this dull job, he suddenly is shaken by the realization that it’s all been a waste, and starts searching for some kind of meaning to life. In the end, this movie is about someone who desperately wants to live before they die.

Based on the story “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” by Leo Tolstoy, this translation to the screen is beautifully realized. The acting is haunting, the cinematography and the music score perfect. Its narrative structure isn’t the standard formula storytelling, it’s inventive and beautifully thought-provoking.  A film which is absolutely riveting and remains one of the most heart-wrenching depictions of the human spirit in its struggle for redemption. If you want to detox from American holiday blockbusters, and discover a new way to see both life and cinema, then this film is may come as an incredible relief.

Wednesday 14/1 20:00 Fossil Free UvA & HvA and Divest VU Present: Free Documentary Night!
We will watch the movie ‘The Carbon Rush’, which takes us around the world to meet the people most impacted by climate change. They are the least heard in the cacophony surrounding in this emerging “green-gold” multi-billion dollar carbon industry.

From indigenous rain forest dwellers having their way of life completely threatened, to dozens of Campesinos assassinated, to the livelihood of waste pickers at landfills taken away, The Carbon Rush travels across four continents and brings us up close to projects working through the United Nations, Kyoto Protocol designed Clean Development Mechanism. This groundbreaking documentary feature asks the fundamental questions “What happens when we manipulate markets to solve the climate crisis? Who stands to gain and who stands to suffer?”

So come watch the movie, and afterwards drink a beer with us and share your questions/thoughts/plans/frustrations with us!

Dinsdag 9/12 19:30 Bolivia night: conscious food, film and discussion
Come join us for a night of Bolivian conscious food, film and discussion!

We will be serving a Bolivian specialty, peanut soup, and the money made from donations will go to a collective in Bolivia called ‘Colective G’ (description below).

Conscious food is a way to respectfully relate with the environment and food. Is about having in mind where food comes from, who is involved in the process, the best combination of ingredients, mindfullness while shopping/harvesting, cooking, eating collectively, and being culturally curious and respectful. Is a protest against consumerism, junk food, animal exploitation, pesticides, herbicides, forced labor, unfair treatment to farmers, land and water grabbing and GM foods; promoting an integrative approach to our relationship with the earth.

We will then watch a Bolivian film ‘Even the Rain’ which is about the popular uprisings against the government plans to privatize water in Bolivia. Afterwards we will be holding a discussion relating to issues raised in the film.

“Colectivo G” is a civil society platform, composed of multidisciplinary young professionals. The aim of the organization is to implement projects related to Human Rights in Bolivia, with a gender perspective (violence prevention, healthy relationships, sexual education, stereotypes, security, etc). We work through art, school workshops, social media, protests, and others.

Woensdag 10/12 20:30 The General Strike in Belgium: Discussion-evening on the Belgian situation

Donderdag 11/12 20:30 Spinema: IF….    (1969)
IF…. is a daring anarchic vision of British society in the late sixties England. It centers on the character of Mick Travis, who, along with his chums, kick at authority at every turn, finally emerging as a violent savior against the powers that be. Violence, sex, fantasy, sadism and poetry- it has it all!  Mixing color and black and white as audaciously as it mixes fantasy and reality, If…. remains one of cinema’s most unforgettable rebel yells….and one of the nearly perfect films in the history of cinema.

Zaterdag 13/12  20:00 “Vessel” the film – screening and Q&A with Women on Waves
According to many Europeans, the debate on abortion is happening elsewhere: probably in those developing countries where women’s rights are always perceived to be worse, or in the United States with abortion clinics staff equipped with bulletproof vests. But the fight is also raging home. Over the past two years, new battlefronts opened throughout the whole of Europe: the radical U-turn taken by Spain; the unrest around “the theory of gender” in France; the extension of the current clause of conscientious objection in Norway and Lithuania; the proliferation of pro-life movements and the rising number (over 90% in some regions) of conscientious objectors in Italy, and the restrictive law in Poland and Ireland. Even in the Netherlands, abortion is not as accessible as it could and should be. These are only some instances that prove that, even though many now take it for granted in Europe, access to safe abortion remains still a young and extremely fragile victory. We want to get together to think about this backlash that is threatening civil liberties and rights to self-determination in Europe. Together with Women on Waves, we will talk about the situation of abortion laws around the world and we will screen the documentary “Vessel”, which follows Women on Waves’ actions and campaigns in Europe and overseas.

As the year 2014 draws to a close, we would therefore like to invite theFossielvrij NL network and other climate activists to get together one final time for an informal evening at Het Spinhuis (Amsterdam)*, to look back on 2014, look forward to 2015, and just enjoy each other’s company and have some fun.

Donderdag 27/11 20:30 Spinema: Spinema: CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER (1961) + La Rabia (1963)

20:30 CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER
(Chronique d’un été)
Directed by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin
85 minutes
In French with English subtitles

One of the key films in the history of cinema, and one that is rarely ever shown these days. Ethnographer Jean Rouch is famous for his anthropological films about African culture, and he was a pioneer in creating a new kind of documentary cinema in which he made films with the participation of his subjects. He would be heralded by the French New Wave, especially by Godard and Rivette, and you can see the impact of his films on their cinema. He is also a favorite of Werner Herzog.

In 1960 filmmaker-anthropologist Rouch collaborated with sociologist Edgar Morin on an experiment. Instead of making so-called “ethnographic” films about people in faraway lands, they decided to turn the camera on their own culture for a change. Using a newly available 16mm camera they set out to do what no one else had done before… to try and capture daily life and discuss it. They felt they needed a structure or theme to unravel the project, so they went into the streets of Paris to ask people if they were happy. The result is shattering, both cinematically and emotionally. Souls are revealed in a way that no dramatic acting could ever come close to…. piercing and moving, precisely because its so real and unscripted. As one viewer said “watch it and be blown away.”

This will be a high-definition screening.

+22:15

La Rabia (1963)
Directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini
54 minutes
In Italian with English subtitles

Produced in 1963 this is a documentary film by the great Italian director Pasolini in which he was given some roles of film and asked to make a movie about his thoughts concerning the following question: Why are our lives ruled by discontent, anguish and fear? The result is a hypnotic journey into the mind and beliefs of the director.

Vrijdag 28/11 21:00 BYOI Accoustic Jam Session
Bring Your Own Instruments and come jam. A (weighted) keyboard will be arranged, due to a piano being a bit hard to carry, a drumkit was slightly out of the budget (sorry drummers!). https://www.facebook.com/events/1513288295625129/
[english below]

Come, Saturday, and let yourself be caught in the fiery word rythms of a Chadian slam artist at Het Spinhuis!

Croquemort, a.k.a. Didier Lalaye, is a slam artist from N’djamena, capital of Tsjaad, a country in central Africe. Severe critique is hidden in his poetic lyrics. Frustrations and emotions that many Chadians encounter every day are put into words by him. He encourages other artists to do the same. Not long ago, he organized a festival N’djam s’enflamme en slam, N’Djamena inflammates in slam. Scalding sentiments and negative emotions can find a way out, catch fire, for both artists and listeners. For more information about him and a short documentary about him and what he does, see http://voice4thought.org/portfolio/croquemort/,http://vimeo.com/110340773.

Croquemorts visit to Amsterdam is connected to the project ‘Voice4thought’, wherein te work and biographies of engaged individuals in different countries in Africa is the central theme. Through their stories, we get to know a different side of Africa, that of young artists, journalists and activists, that are actively trying to better the situation in their countries, often against the will of the government. Maandag 1/12 20:00 Theory & Praxis: On Gender
https://www.facebook.com/events/470225939782318/
In 1993, a small collective known as the “Barbie Liberation Organization” or BLO stirred up the toy industry by switching the voices of Barbies and G.I.Joes. Over 20 years later and the current state of children’s toys is shocking: Barbie is bored out of her mind since all she does is shopping, petting animals and cooking, so she is close to a complete breakdown. After a war in Afghanistan and in Iraq, G.I.Joe is now in reserve for a possible intervention against ISIS. Looks like there still is some liberation to be done!

In the workshop we want to reflect on the role of gender stereotypes in our lives and our societies and envision ways in which we can transgress them best. Inspired by the BLO, we will trie to come up with creative ways of challenging and destroying gender stereotypes. Come and join us!

Dinsdag 18/11 Meeting De Nieuwe Universiteit

Woensdag 19/11 The crisis in Spain and the rise of PODEMOS
The worldwide crisis of capitalism has affected Spain severely. Families are being evicted from their houses, official unemployment numbers are almost 25%, and young people emigrate to Northern Europe. On the political plane we have seen the Indignados movement, the return of the national question and mass demonstrations for a republic after the abdication of the king. The latest development is the spectacular rise of the PODEMOS party, a new leftwing party which is now fighting for the first place in the polls. What are the perspectives for Spain, and what will be the effects of the surge of PODEMOS on the rest of Europe? Join the discussion.

The lead-off will be given by Arturo Rodríguez, Spanish Marxist and member of PODEMOS.

Donderdag 20/11 21:00 Film screening: The Battle of Algiers (1966)
One of the most influential political films in history, Gillo Pontecorvo’s Battle of Algiers shows both sides of the Algerian revolution in a more or less objective way. The tactics of the Front de Libération Nationale guerrilla insurgency and the French counter insurgency, and the uglier incidents of the war, are depicted. Colonizer and colonized commit atrocities against civilians.

Allegedly Andreas Baader’s favourite film, Battle of Algiers raises many provocative questions on the role of political violence. Screenings in the 60s were often perceived as fostering domestic insurrection and providing tactical instructions for revolution. The film was initially banned in France and Israel, while in the United States it was linked with the actions of the Black Panther Party. The film was also used was also used to train Argentine military police for counter-insurgency in the 60s and was screened at the Pentagon in 2003 in order to offer some insight into the challenges surrounding the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Vrijdag 14/11 Spinema: Persona (1966) + Les Maitres Fous (1956)
21:00

PERSONA   1966
Directed by Ingmar Bergman
85 minutes
In Swedish with English subtitles

Wow, can you imagine a film like this was once popular, drawing audiences worldwide? This is totally inconceivable today, when cinema has been commercialized and dumbed down to the level of baby food. Persona was made at a time when people were really open to different  possibilities, and this film is a perfect example of how cinema was once really adventurous and could steer out into uncharted territory.

When Ingmar Bergman conjured up this movie his life was hell, and he was suffering from depression. But that is probably one of the reasons why this film is so uncompromising and radically unique. It was born out of a terrible suffering, the kind of existential dilemma that forces an artist to go to the very source of things.

Persona is about identity, and revolves around the story of an actress who, in the middle of a theater performance, suddenly stops talking for no reason. The movie follows her as she enters a clinic, where everything becomes more and more surreal. Sven Nykvist’s cinematography is both luminescent and razor-sharp at the same time, resulting in some truly haunting images. Starring Bibi Andersson, Liv Ullmann and Gunnar Björnstrand.

This will be a high-definition screening.
+ short film:  LES MAITRES FOUS 1956
Directed by Jean Rouch
30 minutes
Ethnologist Jean Rouch’s groundbreaking and mind-blowing anthropological study of possession rituals in West Africa.

Ever wondered how urban landscapes shape our minds? So did the Situationists, an artsy anti-authoritarian Marxists active in the 60s, with some influence in the ’68 movement in Paris. One of their concerns was the effect of geographical surroundings on the mind. In order to achieve the state of “derivé” (drifting through space without any specific direction), they did some crazy creative activities that we will try in the Spinhuis as well!

Agnes Varda is the neglected founder of the French New Wave (marginalized  because she was a woman), and her cinema has been largely ignored outside of France for decades… so I am happy she is finally attaining some measure of the respect she deserves! This is a witty, thoughtful film… one of her very best… and is a perfect example of how more documentaries should have  imagination.

Why Does Herr R, Run Amok? (1970) (21:00)
( Warum läuft Herr R. Amok?)

Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
88 minutes
In German with English subtitles

The powerful 25-year old German filmmaker Werner Fassbinder tossed out this bomb to an unexpected German middle class public. I’m not sure they ever forgave him. Kurt Raab stars in this devastating film which lam-blasts the mediocrity of our civilization.

The main character seems to have a “good” life… he has a job, pocket money, a beautiful wife, all the benefits of our modern “democratic” world. But between the absolute boredom of his routine job and a family back at home that is always nagging at him, the mild mannered Herr R has little chance for neither peace nor passion in his life. This film turns our existence inside-out. Ingenuous, piercing, sublime. Also featuring Hanna Schygulla, Ingrid Caven, Irm Hermann and the regular Fassbinder troupe.

“The most disgusting film I ever made.” – Rainer Werner Fassbinder
